Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina forever changed my personal and professional life. Who can forget the pictures of animals swimming, sitting on cars, rooftops or anything dry they could reach, doing anything they could to survive. These images haunted me, so I went to New Orleans as soon as I could. I searched the city for any survivors and camped out in a truck for more than two weeks. While I was there we got word that the Lamar Dixon holding facility was going to shut down. I was asked to help find a place to go for the remaining 350 dogs on the property. Linda Blair Worldheart Foundation took 51 of those dogs.
The PetSmart Rescue Waggin helped with part of the journey, then I purchased a used motorhome to drive the dogs back to Los Angeles. I was fortunate to have a few great volunteers that helped along the way and in Los Angeles. I hadn't yet purchased the LBWF Wellness Center so all the dogs had to be boarded. Every day we would go to the boarding facility to walk and play with the dogs. Once a week we had a volunteer day that enabled all the dogs to be out for hours at a time.
